Are You Really Using the right AI? Why It Matters to Check the URL

In the last few months, I've had several clients come to me (or I have noticed this issue on the web browser whilst sat with them) convinced they were using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, only for us to discover they were actually accessing them through third-party websites. Worse still, some were even paying for the privilege – unknowingly handing over money (and potentially data) to services they didn't fully understand.
Now, I'm not here to name and shame. These clients weren't doing anything wrong – they simply weren't aware. And honestly, it's an easy mistake to make. Some of these proxy sites are slick, and they often come up high in search results. But there's a bigger issue at play here: privacy, security, and trust.
When you're using an AI model like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, you should know who you're talking to. That starts with making sure you're on the official website. Anything else, and you're putting yourself at risk of poor performance, dodgy data handling, or simply getting less value for your money.
So here are a few URLs worth bookmarking:
ChatGPT (OpenAI): https://chat.openai.com
Claude (Anthropic): https://claude.ai
Gemini (Google): https://gemini.google.com
Microsoft Copilot: https://copilot.microsoft.com
Perplexity: https://www.perplexity.ai
If you're seeing a different web address in your browser's bar, double-check it. And if you're being asked to pay for access, especially upfront or with limited information, take a step back. The major players all offer free tiers or trials, and they make it clear what you're getting. Whilst there will always be questions about what these big LLM players do with your data too, at least they are under the media and technical spotlight, with something to lose if they get it badly wrong!
To be clear, not all third-party tools are bad. Some offer added features, integrations, or niche functionality that might genuinely suit your needs. But you should go into those with eyes open, knowing what you're trading off and why.
At the end of the day, I want you to get the most from these powerful tools – safely, securely, and with full confidence. If you're ever unsure whether you're in the right place, drop me a message. I'd rather you ask than get caught out.
Stay smart out there, and check those URLs!
